This tight end-of-terrace site was enclosed on all sides, with no potential for outward-facing windows due to boundary constraints and the close proximity of neighbouring first-floor windows. As a result, any new dwelling would need to be single-storey and designed with exceptional care to protect both neighbour amenity and the existing streetscape.
The challenge: how to introduce natural light into every room without external windows? The solution was to carve out a central courtyard and wrap the plan around it—bringing daylight deep into the home and creating a private outdoor space. High vaulted ceilings further enhance the sense of openness and generosity within.
The result is a carefully considered, light-filled dwelling that nestles modestly against its neighbour—reading more like a garage in scale, yet providing a fully functional and uplifting home.
